Ursula Vernon adventures under her bed amongst the dust-bunny-people to save her ankles and satisfy a monster curiosity. You should come too.

Remember all the rules you piously obeyed as a child in order to protect yourself from monsters? Tucking in the edges of the blanket, braving asphyxiation under the blue flannel, considering buying a snorkel? The second comic in this series (the first is also fantastic, and features a fuzzy blue aztec fingernail-stealing monster singing "Stairway"), reminds you of all that, hitting on every familiar point you almost forgot. In the meantime, Ursula shares her sharp-shooting wit with hilarious narrative. So, pull out a blanket and join her in an adventure under the bed. They have cheese sandwiches there. ... read it now!

A beautifully written and drawn tale that perfectly captures the tone of classic pulp fantasy.

Craig A. Taillefer's art is highly realistic and detailed, as readers of Wahoo Morris on ModernTales will know, but of all his works online this is easily my favorite. The finely rendered pen and ink work serves to draw the reader into the shadowy world of the thief Sian, beautifully depicting the humanity of the characters that dwell there. The sense of heightened realisim succeeds in making us all the more astounded by the classic fantasy elements of this tale. The writing is succinct and sharp, but with enough detail to illustrate the richness of the setting. Though the story is complete in of itself in about 20 pages, it ends with the promise of more. Maybe if enough people discover this work through WCN Craig will be inspired to continue the adventure... ... read it now!

I really don't know how Ursula Vernon does it.

She writes fantasy comics and stories that ought to send me into a diabetic coma within about three panels. And yet not only do I read them without a hint of nausea, I actually get hooked on them. I mean, bad enough that she's turned a comic about a talking wombat in a world of magic into one of my favourite comics (that would be her Eisner-nominated "Digger" at Graphic Smash). But she's now created a couple of heavily-illustrated text stories, in children's book format, about an adorable little mouse-like creature with pink hearts on its forehead, and she's got me loving them. And it's not like I can defend myself by saying they're some kind of ironic deconstruction of kid's books, or sarcastically twisted parodies either. I mean, sure, they're drenched in subversive wit, and have the same dark edge to the artwork that Ursula always brings, but the sweetness is totally genuine. They're meant to bring a warm fuzzy glow to the cockles of my heart, and they actually DO. What am I, a 10-year-old girl? Sheesh. Thanks for robbing me of my manhood, Vernon. Now, I'm off to cuddle up with some peppermint tea and Rob Liefield comics. ... read it now!
