Balsam Eyre was the granddaughter of an English doctor who went to Saudi Arabia and fell in love with a Saudi woman there, the daughter of a local Jeddah physician. He converted to Islam, and one of their grandchildren was Balsam Eyre. Her father, like her grandfather, was a doctor. Balsam was a young woman during World War I, and met T.E. Lawrence, Lawrence of Arabia, when he was active. Though there was no public schooling for women at the time, her father and grandfather taught her privately, for she was insatiably curious and had a questing mind.
After the war, her parents and she went on the ha'aj, the trip to Mecca, but along the way were captured by a Zha'Tahn ship. Her parents did not survive their captivity, but Balsam was transformed to see if she could help her fellow captives. Afterwards, she was let go---whether out of guilt for her parents' death or some more alien reason, no one knows, but she was returned to where she disappeared, a year later. Returning to Jeddah, her brother, a prominent Jeddah businessman, was contacted by Ashton Soul who eventually met Balsam. She was inducted into the Next Level and became their healer/doctor. She studied medicine at the Sorbonne and Edinburgh under an assumed name, complimenting her own abilities with more knowledge.
During World War II she posed as her own niece, helping the struggle against Rommel, and acting as a Red Crescent "nurse" to many physicians who had no idea that many of their successes were due to Balsam's healing touch. Of course, she didn't age, due to Ageless' abilities.
Her powers are a direct communication with cells---both in her own body and the body of anyone she touches...and a consequent ability for her body (or the one she's touching) to act on it. She has a Wolverine-like "healing factor" which heals any injury done to her within seconds to a few minutes. Similarly, she can heal others almost as fast of most cuts, broken bones, etc. However, other diseases, like cancers, are more resistent or recur again in a different form.
She is currently the director of the Raven Corporation Medical Complex, where she oversees complicated medical research and, in rare cases, uses her abilities to intervene. Still a practicing Muslim, she has adopted the Red Crescent as a symbol.
