Jan Nielsen is a human catalyst. He can speed or slow chemical reactions in his vicinity--like make a knife instantly rust, for instance. He can especially influence biochemical reactions---speeding plant growth, to where a plant grows before your eyes, or alternately slowing metabolism where one goes into a coma. He can make hair grow where one has turned bald--or alternately, riddle you with tomors and malignant growths.

He can also sense biochemical reactions in his vicinity. If there are living things near him, even if hidden, he can sense it.

An independent farmer and gardner, he also has been a fencing instructor, until he gave it up to maintain a better living for his lovely but somewhat cold wife. He still fences recreationally.
