Behind the Scenes
A tremendous amount of time was spent on modeling the temporal rift and on the "future suit" for Future Gallimimus. I should have just gone with a quicker method.
The temporal rift is an example of adding more and more junk to something mediocre. Too many layers. I should have gone with a simple cone or even a 2D plane with a helix image. Although in my defense, I put in the effort because I planned to use the rift again (it does indeed show up in Episode 4). I just wish it turned out better.
I have a better excuse for the future suit. I was trying to make an actual shirt object from the Gallimimus mesh. I don't have the tools or the talent to make real Poser clothes, but since Gallimimus doesn't move around much I thought I could make a static prop. But the Gallimimus mesh is rather complex (i.e., messy) around the arms and nothing remotely useful came out of that effort. In the end I went with a "second skin" -- that is, I just painted over the texture used for his skin, and that didn't even turn out very good. The torus and little antenna were added simply because Dogbert wears a suit like that when they have a scene from the future on Dilbert.
Behind the Lobe
One of the reasons the temporal rift took forever to model was that I wanted something 3D. Not because this is a 3D comic (although that is a better reason), but because an actual spatio-temporal rift is almost certainly going to be in 3 dimensions and not, say, flat, like the event horizon on Stargate SG-1.
It's this attention to detail that makes...uh, well...almost no contribution at all to whether or not the comic is, like, funny.
