April 16, 2004: Zydeco legend Queen Ida rips it up in Portland's Crystal Ballroom.

ENDNOTES and DIGRESSIONS:

1. Grey-tones for this comic are by Chad Essley.

2. "You can come to my party ANY TIME!" is, apparently, Queen Ida's signature line; she said it about three times during the show, and it never failed to elicit a collective yelp.

3. This is the only concert this cartoonist ever attended in which there was a woman kickin' it -- in the thick of the front row -- while supporting herself on one of those combination wheelchair/walkers. It was just bloody marvelous.

4. Want to learn more? There's zydeco dancing Wednesdays at the Portland Police Athletic Association. Dance lessons start at 7:15 p.m., with dancing from 8 to 10 p.m. Cover's only $3. You can learn more at www.cascade-zydeco.com.
