July 7, 2004: CulturePulp takes in a performance of "The Famous Mysterious Actor Show."

Endnotes and Digressions:

1. Grey-tones for this installment by Chad Essley.

2. You can learn more about the show — including future performances — at the Famous Mysterious Actor's MySpace page.

3. One wracks the brain trying to come up with the perfect phrase to describe the program, but as usual, one is out-done by periodic CulturePulp guest star S.W. “Conch” Conser, who turned me on to this event: “Imagine the old Steve Allen Tonight Show with Pee-Wee Herman behind the desk.” Well, exactly.

4. I’d wager that the “Famous Mysterious Actor” — whom we won’t name here — wouldn’t be half as fearlessly funny if he weren’t wearing that mask. In fact, I’ll wager that the mask is a necessary actor’s crutch in this case, as “Famous” heaps relentless, hilarious abuse on some intimidating guests — which on July 7 included local noise/music legends Sean Croghan and Mike Lastra.

The Mask! The Legend!
