Aug. 15, 2004: CulturePulp attends a special screening of "Outfoxed: Rupert Murdoch's War on Journalism" -- with director Robert Greenwald in attendance.

Endnotes and Digressions:

1. Grey-tones for this installment by Chad Essley

2. Yr. hmbl. cartoonist actually found “Outfoxed” pretty mean and funny, if a little much-ado-about-obvious. In keeping with recent trends, the film’s not so much a documentary as it’s a strongly worded op-ed. I enjoy watching bullies get mocked as much as anyone, and Bill O’Reilly — based on the flash-edited evidence here — certainly gets caught in some delusional fibs.

The film’s three greatest successes are that (a) O’Reilly comes off as a weapons-grade jack-a-napes; (b) it offers a nice primer on opinion-journalist semantics; and (c) Fox News Channel’s “Fair & Balanced” tag does end up looking, well, a bit misleading, to say the least.

But still: $300k worth of research to prove that a TV station’s slogan is inaccurate? I suspect that “Outfoxed” preaches its “gotchas” roundly to the choir. The movie’s at its weakest when it makes points that play to a shared set of assumptions — i.e., when it tries to prove “bias” simply by showing Fox News footage of Bush stating his positions. Well, what else is he supposed to state? Does presenting Bush as an inarticulate arch-conserative to people who’ve already made up their minds about him elevate the national debate one tiny bit?
