Endnotes and Digressions:
1. Grey-tones for this installment by Chris Hanel.
2. We were looking for boletes (better-known in overpriced restaurants as porcini) and chanterelle mushrooms; we didn’t find much of the latter.
3. We were not looking for matsutake mushrooms -- the variety that famously inspired Gold Rush-style, pistol-packing rivalries in the 1990s. As chronicled in some recent [2004] Oregonian articles, matsutake hunters have suffered in the wake of the same mushroom glut that was so wonderful for us that Sunday. Harvesters who used to make $1,000 a day are making a 40th of that now, and it’s just super-bad juju all around — though of course it’s also good news for buyers and amateur hunters like my in-laws.
