On May 8, 2009, CulturePulp was among the Web writers participating in the Portland Opera's "Blogger Night @ The Opera," chronicling a performance of "Rigoletto." This "live comics adpatation" of the opera was the result.

Endnotes & Digressions:

1. The pictures were drawn in a spiral-bound sketchbook with a Sharpie during the show. I then photographed each drawing with my camera-phone and posted links to the photos in my Twitter feed during intermissions on "Blogger Night." The comic you see here is assembled from those drawings and (more or less) from the Twitter posts that accompanied the links.

3. Here's the Portland Opera's official press release on "Blogger Night @ The Opera" (and here are their photos of the evening). "Rigoletto" continues May 14 and 16, 2009; you can find all the show info (and a study guide) right here.

4.  Links to the other Web-writers' coverage of "Rigoletto":

Bob Kingston (bobopera) says: Mike, these are great! Thanks for posting them. I hope you don't mind that I'm sending people over here from my blog (
Mike Russell (culturepulp) says: Wow -- thanks for the kind words! I don't mind one teeny tiny bit, sir.
