The most obscure joke ever.

Yes, this is the most obscure joke I've ever done.  If you get the reference, a million nerd points to you.

OK, back several years ago, there was a webcomic called "1/0" (pronounced "one over zero"), written and drawn by Mason Williams (aka "Tailsteak").  In this strip, the artist created a world and introduced a few characters, who then set to arguing about the rules of their existence, trying to define the world they lived in, and in some cases choosing not to believe in their creator.  At the end, the artist gave them all normal bodies (when the cast includes an eyeball, a few sentient molecules, a grass golem, and a worm, "normal" is pretty broadly defined), and sent them to live in our world ... specifically, as you may have guessed, Portland, Oregon.

As soon as that strip ended, Shaenon Garrity (who I may have mentioned once or twice before) suggested to other cartoonists that they should keep the 1/0 cast alive by giving them cameos in various webcomics.  There was one brief appearance in "Narbonic", but no one else seems to have taken up the challenge.  Well, let this situation not go uncorrectified (as Marcus would say).

And while you're at it, clear a day or two on your calendar and read through the 1/0 archives.  It's exactly 1000 strips long, so you know when The End Is Near.  Matter of fact, so do the characters.

Tailsteak's latest project is a slice-of-life comic called "Leftover Soup".  Still fairly early in its run, you can get up to speed easily.

Tailsteak's other projects can be found here.

Thanks, Mason ... keep up the great work!

Woohoo! I get a million nerd points!

(I actually read 1/0 before the end.)

I read I/O too, but didn't catch the joke at all. I'm pleased to see them, though. Thanks for explaining it!

LOL 1/0 Shout Out.

Shout Outs are always kind of risky, in case one work ages and the other does not, but I thought 1/0 was hilarious and thought-provoking, so meh.

Mark Chapman (aardvark86) says:

Thanks for reminding me of that brilliant strip. I've just finished reading the archives again, which has shown me how lovingly you've rendered the characters' "Portland, Oregon" identities, down to the Running Gag in the last panel.

Nyerguds (nyerguds) says:

I just read through the 1/0 archives. Magnificent. A true tribute to the stories we create, and the characters in them :)

Niek Deurloo (ardawen) says:

Aaaaaand leftoversoup brought me here

I love this too.

cheers and well wishes from Holland
