An aged reactionary of indeterminate background, Hiram tries to remain closely involved in the affairs of his alma mater, a New England liberal arts college that was for typically white, almost always affluent men during his time there, now a den of communism and witchcraft where he fears his daughter Laputa will be corrupted by "financial aid boys."
