From this grumpy, cynical, hair-trigger skeptical atheist's lips to your ears: Dean Rankine's Christian comics are an awesome read.

I typically enjoy religious or evangelical comics ironically (Jack Chick!) or not at all. The most common reaction is the latter; the majority of what I've seen isn't just condescending, but so gleefully sinister and threatening that I half-expect the text to be pieced together from letters cut out of magazine covers and warning me not to call the cops.

Dean's comics are completely different. I may be reviewing "Clubbing Seals is Probably Wrong," but I enjoy all of his work. He spends so little time badgering unbelievers with his opinion on the state of their souls that it's extraordinary. Instead, he concentrates on topics like "Stupid things Christians buy while people are hungry," the rejuvenating power his faith imparts him, love, forgiveness, charity, and retelling Biblical stories in a modern context. And he does it all using such a uniquely signature style that I can't help but dig it, from the head-splitting goofball grins to the popped-out, ping pong ball eyes. It's just too much fun. When I first started looking at, 'One of a Hundred' I thought, 'Wow! This is going to be a tough read'.

You'd have to be a brave man to do a webcomic about a funeral. Especially, one that explores a touchy subject like spirituality. But Marc Joyce seems to be pulling it off with integrity intact. Joyce has a lovely cartoony drawing style. And his 'easy going' dialogue (and touching humour) carries the story along with ease and grace. Each installment peels away another layer to reveal more of the main characters thoughts and fears as he tries to come to grips with a heartbreaking loss. Sometimes (because of the subject matter) it CAN be a tough read but a worthwhile read none the less ... read it now!

Lots of good lessons in fun bite-sized pieces!

When I first contemplated becoming a Christian, I was afraid that I would have to put up with lame boring stuffy judgemental "comics" and give up anything that I would consider funny. Then I found Dean's comics... He has a way of delivering a moral in ways that anyone can find fun without being judged. The artwork is original, colorful, and something the average person wouldn't consider coming from a Christian. In some ways, his comics gave me some of the courage to create my own. I picked this comic out in particular because the meaning strikes a chord in me by jabbing at the people I had always considered Christians to be. ... read it now!
