Joey Manley on Agnes Quill by Dave Roman, Jason Ho, Jeff Zornow, & Raina Telgemeier

Dave Roman, Jason Ho, Jeff Zornow, and Raina Telgemeier are blowing everybody's minds with their new AGNES QUILL series.
If I were a Hollywood shillster, I'd tell you that Agnes Quill is a cross between the TV show Medium and Nancy Drew, with plenty of Neil Gaiman thrown into the mix. But, then, that would probably be too long for a Hollywood pitch just right there. Those guys require 25 words or less, right? Sheesh. And I haven't even gotten around to telling you about the amazing artwork, the clever storylines, or the well-rounded characters! I guess you'll just have to read it for yourself ... ... read it now!

Joey Manley on Supernatural Law by Batton Lash

Batton Lash brings his acclaimed indie comic book series to the web, with brand new stories in living color! Or, um, sometimes undead color.
Supernatural Law creator Batton Lash has long been a fixture in the indie comics scene, well-known for advocating the idea of a "new mainstream" -- that is, comics in non-superhero genres that, in any other medium, would be considered mainstream entertainment.

The Supernatural Law webcomic is just one more way to reach out to a new audience, for this cartoonist whose whole career seems to have been built around the idea of reaching out to new audiences for comics.

These aren't reprints of his acclaimed trade paperbacks, by the way: it's all-new, all-original material designed specifically with the web in mind.

What's more, it's just gorgeous. There's something about Lash's inking style and storytelling rhythm that reminds me of vintage Archive Comics, back when they were good, particularly the adventure stories they did with the characters in the late sixties and early seventies. Since those comics were my own original doorway into the wonderful mansion of comics, I'm particularly vulnerable to that sort of thing.

But maybe you will be, too. ... read it now!

AP. Furtado on Zero Hunters By Jay Carvajal, Marc Borstel, Federico & Karina Lopizzo and Carlos Razetto

I can honestly say, without shame, that I'm not a huge fan of the action genre. It's not that I don't enjoy a thrill ride now and again; I actually love it, but it's tough to find something that hasn't been done a thousand times already.
This isn't just something that's only true for the action genre; it's factual for any genre. Occasionally someone will come along and find a way to manipulate and present the familiar, and make it seem new and interesting. One such person is Jay Carvajal. It's no secret once you read the first page of Zero Hunters, or any of Jay's numerous projects that he has a great love for the worlds of action/adventure and notably, the horror genre. Jay manages to meld these into something quite familiar yet, adeptly reels you into his stories with some outstanding writing and dialog which makes you forget all the familiarities. I had the pleasure of reading one of Jay's scripts, sans eye-candy and it was, in one word, riveting. Jay's talent for describing visuals without inundating you with monotonous descriptions is top notch and it's no secret to me now why so many artists want to work with him. Throw in some outstanding art by folks like Marc Borstel, Federico & Karina Lopizzo, Carlos Razetto, and those who have yet to make themselves known, and you have some fantastic comics on both the web and in print. This probably wasn't just about Zero Hunters but more about the talent behind the curtain at Cinema Comics. Jay Carvajal and Cinemacomics are going to be making some waves. ... read it now!
