le pingouink History

In the summer of 2006, a friend of mine was in Paris, where her boyfriend did not propose to her. Some good did come out of the trip, however, as she was given (or possibly stole) a box of le pingouink strips from the late 1980's.

If you haven't heard of le pingouink, some explanation is in order, so you understand what a find this was. It seems the creator had drawn (or possibly stolen, there are still at least three artists (two of which are American) claiming the drawings are theirs) twelve pictures. They are of a man, a woman and a penguin. These pictures were rearranged randomly to tell three-panel stories of this penguin, named Shami, and his doomed love affair with a woman, known only as Madame.

The comics were first found rolled up inside discarded cigarette packages. Thankfully for later researchers, an obsessive compulsive librarian named Robert Robert found what is believed to be the first of the comics. It was found on November 22nd, 1987 and while there was no date on the comic, it seemed to set the stage for what was to come.
