AcknowledgementsAngi would like to express his thanks as follows: click here.from Derek There are many I'd like to thank and I want to be as exhaustive as possible, but I'm just a dumb male and as such will probably omit individuals I should have thanked. This is not intentional, please don't be offended, it's just my neurons misfiring. My sister Denise, for being fiery to my even-keel (often misinterpreted as catatonia), and providing a reference for what it's like to have a social life. For sticking your neck out and following your intuition despite my cautionary advice. My brother Roland, for pursuing what you want to do rather than what you should do. For being outdoors. For drawing the Lion King on your wall. For reigniting a thread of connection back to India. For teaching me to laugh. Mama, for raising three amazing children while traveling the globe at a breakneck pace. We owe who we are to you. For teaching us the pursuit of quality. Daddy, for having the courage and curiosity to leave the farm in Illinois and see the world, and bring the world to us. Our government could use more people like you right now. For you and Mama footing the Stanford bill. My family, for inspiring creativity and the pursuit of challenges, and a broad worldview. I loved every minute of growing up with you overseas. For everything you've given and continue to give me and us. I owe everything I am to you and the opportunities you've given me. Oma, Tante Dagi, Onkel Peter, Grandma and Grandpa, and all the Stevenson aunts and uncles, for providing a vast palette of incredible characters from which to draw our stories. It truly does take a village. The Waites, for your incredible generosity, support, and welcoming home to all the Stevensons, human and cat. Rory, for taking a chance on a bio-gone-cs-wannabe. For moving to Hawaii. Despite your protests, you truly are a good person. There is much arete in you. Driveway, for the most intense work learning experience. I don't regret a minute of it. Special thanks to Phil, Gavin, and Dave for laying the foundation for my day job. Books schmooks, all you need is a gang like you to train people. Summit, for my first and fourth jobs. For charting a course for so many cross-functional students that have entered your doors. A special thanks to Parvati, Jenn, Amy, Dr. Heinrichs, and Brent. Stanford, for opening the doors of biology. Special thanks to Udaya, Jodie, Bruce, Kyle. Hopkins Marine Station, for a truly magical experience by and in the ocean. Special thanks to Gary, Jim, and Mark. AES, for HS and for teaching me about India. Special thanks to the class of '92. Marc, for having crazy ideas. For getting married and putting Angi and I at the same table. Hem paggel he! Angi, for staying in touch. For providing the idea. "Let's write a graphic novel!" "Ok, why not? You live in NJ, I live in CA, who cares?" Our cat Murmur, for keeping us on our toes. And finally, my incomparable wife, Hilary. Thank you for your patience while I abandoned you for the phone and computer. For being the sensible one. For seeing the world with me. For cleaning up the environment, pursuing a law degree, editing the law review, carrying twins -- ALL AT ONCE. If Angi and I were as efficient as you we'd have wrapped this up a year ago. You truly are my inspiration. Words really can't do you justice. I love you. |
