It is fortunate that Hurricane Gustav turned out to be less destructive than predicted. The Republicans were right to devote time to raising money to relieve the burdens of hurricane evacuees. But when the spotlight is off New Orleans and the rest of the Gulf Coast, what then? Right now I am watching the nominee for Vice President give a tough, hold-nothing-back speech that makes the beefy, red-faced white people on the delegate floor very happy. She will not be anyone's doormat, so Democrats had best stop underestimating her and speculating about her daughter's pregnancy. If John McCain wins, Sarah Palin could be the GOP's first woman nominee, and if she's lucky, America's first woman President. Talk about your bitter pills.
