Me, personally, I don’t think that the world of computing will experience anything more than incremental advances until we get virtual reality. Granted, the ideal thing would be direct neural jacks. Which reminds me of back when I was looking at Usenet groups and researching the whole “Cyberpunk” phenomenon. Now, aside from the fact that Usenet is really dead these days, except for file trading and the occasional moderated newsgroup, the cyberpunk groups were pretty desolate. I guess I figured that there’d be more there. I did some digging into the archives of a few groups, and came across an interesting quote. Someone had asked in the group why it was so dead and no one talked about cyberpunk anymore. The reply was “Cyberpunk was about pondering a future, high-technology, dystopian society. We don’t need to ponder it anymore, since we pretty much live it.” On a unrelated note, I think some bug bit me on the neck while I was sleeping. |
