News for 2006-06-14

I mean seriously. If you haven’t read it, this is what I’m talking about.

It reminds me of a story from the Old Testament, from back when I took a class called “Bible as Literature”. One of the books dealt with figuring out who the true identities of various authors, of various books, in the Bible were. At least, as far as we can tell. He uses various linguistic and literary methods to figure out interesting things.

In any event, one of the things that stuck in my head was the story of a Babylonian king who lays seige to Jerusalem (or some other major Israelite city of the era). He’s there for a pretty long time, but can never manage to take the city. So, eventually, he takes off. The interesting thing about it, is that the seige is one of a very few events in the Bible that we have outside accounts of as well (at least, reliable, verified accounts). In this case, in the Old Testament, they talk about how the resolve of the city inhabitants (and Yahweh, of course), helped them to drive away the Babylonians (I’m fairly certain it was the Babylonians anyway, if not it was the Assyrians). However, the King Who Went Home, states in his account that he “kept the Israelies caged up in their city like a pet bird.” Effectively, he attemps to spin a pointless campaign into a winning one, since no one lays seige to a city just because….

So in that sense, it seems to me that the RIAA is trying to pull a fast one here. Especially since Hillary Rosen stepped down earlier this year and they’re under new direction. Perhaps they realized it was a battle they could never really “win”, so by redefining “win” to mean “contain the growth of”, they get to come out on top. Seems like a bizarre idea, but this is corporate America, where you can actually outright say that your strategy is “overall good” even when suing 12-year-olds and grandmothers, as they do here.

In other events, there was no strip for Monday because, frankly, I kinda forgot I had to do one. In the future, if there is no strip, I heartily recommend you catch up with Questionable Content, as it is routinely supplying the good readings, in my opinion.

I’ve been going back and forth as to whether or not I should use templates ala PVP, but I’ve not decided entirely. I was, at least, going to try and make some tonight, but I picked up (in addition to a few others) The Path of Neo, which is almost thoroughly excellent. As such, I ended up playing that for too long and had to do the strip in a traditional manner.

My problem with the templates is that so far most of my ideas require me to make new drawings all the time. I mean, how many times will I use that drawing of RIAA President Cary Sherman?

So, dunno.
