NZ's take on SOE's new MMO, "Vanguard - Saga of Heroes"

News for 2007-03-016

So, I'm sitting around doodling on Wednesday and this comic pops out onto the paper. All unwrapped and ready to go. Crazy promiscuous comics runnin' around art-ing with anyone and everyone.

I've played Vanguard - Saga of Heroes for a grand total of, oh, 20 minutes so far since I bought it. Not for lack of trying, I swear. The install is on 2 DVDs and took like 45 minutes to copy to the HDD. Then the SOE Station signup took a while, even though I'd played SWG and The Matrix Online before (incidentally, the latter I've been meaning to go back and see but haven't ever gotten around to it... anyone know if the combat has gotten a little more understandable since Combat 2.0 got introduced?).

After that, it looked at every file that the V:SoH install had put on the drive, and decided to spend several hours downloading new versions and updating them. Which actually ended up being 2 days because I didn't want my noisy computer keeping me up at night.

Initial impressions, though:

The character creation process results in an avatar that is somewhat unique, but not as unique as I recall being the outcome in City of Heroes

The graphics are very pretty.

There's something kinda gimpy about the walking animation that I haven't entirely figured out yet.

My spellcaster isn't super-sucky so far

The soundtrack is suitably Lothlorien-esque for its scenery.

Other than that, I guess my feeling on the whole thing is encompassed by the comic.

Laters!
