News for 2007-09-28

Trying to remember my Calculus so that I could try and pull off this gag was no small feat. Though now that I'm pondering it, that might be due to the paint fumes.

So, I mentioned cat pee before. My cat had a UTI a while back, and apparently had it for a while, so she'd pee'd in a few places in my apartment. Of course, I didn't realize this until after she'd been doing it for a while, and the UTI cleared up with some antibiotics.

Problem was that even though I treated and cleaned up the pee, it soaked into the carpet padding and what not. So most of the last week has featured myself trying to destinkify my apartment. This task was not helped by the fact that the running boards are not, in fact, rubber or treated wood, but apparently pressed cardboard painted black. So, they absorbed the pee and expanded. As a result, I had to dig out the nasty cardboard and refill/repaint that.

Still, the smell lingered. Turned out (as I was replacing the carpet padding) that the tack strips for the carpet were not only pee-laden, but ROTTING. Nasty smelling, even after all the treatment. BUT THE NASTIEST SMELL WAS YET TO COME! Since this apartment is, at the very least, wood with a ton of plaster layered on it (no drywall), they stunk these big nails into the floor, and the pee had seeped into those nail shafts. So I pulled them out and NEARLY PUKED from the smell. That's the worst smell I've encountered in a long-ass time.

So, replaced the carpet pads, poured some of that enzymatic cleaner down those wholes, ditched the tack boards, and after it all dried, painted over the carpenter putty I'd put into the holes from the nasty cardboard.

Unfortunately, I've been unable to find replacement carpet, but I cut it away and, after dousing it with more enzymatic cleaner, put it out on the deck to air out. If I'm lucky, it'll work out (I've put rugs that were dirty or smell out there before and they clean up remarkably well).

Anywho, time for sleeps.
