We don't actually know a whole lot about Karen's past. She used to be a housewife and before that, had lived in Fairbanks with her friend Pepper in the 1970s. She's open, outgoing, friendly, and has a talent for making friends with a wide variety of people ... most of whom hate each other, a source of constant conflict in her life. Her dream is to move to the wilderness, get a dog and build a cabin.

Karen is in her early fifties. She dyes her short hair red with a light forelock. Her natural color (seen once, in a photo of her with Pepper) is more of a dark, dishwater blonde.
