Geek Cheat Sheet Dictionary Which Any Self Respecting Geek Will Not Need

Part One

WORKING WITH MICROSOFT WINDOWS

The Bars In WordPad

Title Bar The top bar containing the Document Name, Program Icon, Program Name, and some nice Buttons, which can Minimize WordPad so you don't have to look at it, Maximize WordPad so you have to look at it, and Close WordPad, which will get rid of it, and is a good thing to do.

Menu Bar The next bar down, contains the File, Edit, View, Insert, Format and Help menus.

Tool Bar Next bar, contains buttons for New, Open, Save, Print, Print Preview, Find, Cut, Copy, Paste, Undo and Insert Date/Time, which looks a bit like this: "Wednesday, 7 March 2007".

Scroll Bar The bar along the side, used to move around in long documents.

Status Bar The bottom bar, tells you what you are pointing at, unless you want to know what the thing is, then it will say "For Help, press F1."

By the way, don't use WordPad if you know what is good for you. Instead, download OpenOffice.Org and use that. If you can't afford OpenOffice.Org, which is unlikely because it is open source and therefore free, then use NotePad.

Microsoft Windows Stuff

Task Bar This bar is below every other bar in Windows, and has a button labeled Start. There will be other buttons next to it that are for your current open windows, and can be used to switch between them with a click, or, if you don't want to waste time, press ALT-TAB instead.

Resizing Resizing is really terribly difficult, much harder than algebra, calculus, and all other mathematics. Here's what you do: Grab the edge of the window with your mouse, and then pull on it. It will resize. Here's the part that's harder than calculus: You can't resize a window if you've maximized it! Of course, this makes sense if you happen to work at Microsoft's usability labs. But if you don't, it seems like a quick programming shortcut, which it is, simply not to break your Restore button.

Lemon Lemon is a citrus fruit, that is used to make lemonade. It has a pleasant yellowy colour and doesn't taste very nice without sugar. If you like eating lemons without sugar, you could go in a competition to eat lots of lemons. I don't actually know of any such competitions, but if you find one, I'd like you to let me know, because lemons are cool. This doesn't have anything to do with Windows, but ah well.

Part Two

WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED, IF ANYTHING? QUICK Q&A

What is the difference between a drive, folder and file?

Drives are physical thingys that store information.

Folders go inside drives, are digital instead of physical, and sort files neatly.

Files are the bits of information inside your drive in neat folders (or a horrible pile of messy junk in the My Documents folder).

Describe 2 ways to open a file.

Double click your file.

Use the OPEN command in your application.

List 5 different file types.

.DOC - Word Document

.ZIP - Zip Archives

.RAR - Rar Archives

.LNK - Shortcut Files

.EXE - Programs

When editing, what are:

CUT

Remove the selected stuff and put it on the Clipboard.

COPY

Put the stuff on the Clipboard, but don't take it out of the document.

PASTE

Put the stuff on the Clipboard into the document. NOTE: The stuff will still be in the Clipboard anyway, as well as in your document. (So you can paste something 12 times without copying or cutting it again).

How do we create a new folder, using the Windows Explorer shell?

Open up a rightclick menu and select New > Folder. (probably will be blocked)

OR

Select File > New > Folder.

How do we use the RECYCLE BIN?

Delete some stuff, and then open up the BIN. It might be there. If you are lucky. If you are lucky, you can get the files out using the Restore option off the right click menu, or just drag them out.

How do we rename a file?

Right click and pick Rename. If right click is broken, the restrictions are stupid, and you can't rename until I tell you to go to the File menu to pick Rename instead.
