All my life I've heard this old saying, usually spoken by older people.  Since never is an absolute, it's not really possible to put it into practice in this case, unless you have nothing else to do.  But it just doesn't sound the same to say, "Whenever possible, farts are not to be trusted".  Please e-mail me at:  pjones41@kc.rr.com.
