Aw man, Carol comes off as too much a bitch. I know she's feeling awkward in trying to fit in, but I hate seeing Woodlouse get the better of her that easily.
Berger, I'm glad you're giving me comments like this. I'm always busy trying to juggle the plot, which is really complex, so I sometimes can lose sight of whether the characters are being likeable or not. (This actually seems to be a recurring problem in long-form storytelling in general.)
I kind of meant for this to show that Carol and Woodlouse's animosity was becoming a bit more playful and less mean-spirited, even if they're still taking shots at each other. But this whole month is fairly Carol-centric, and hopefully you'll be on her side fairly soon. She's sort of confused, having been born and raised to be a killer and all. But I think by the end of the month she'll have atoned nicely (without the traditional method of being killed violently while doing something redemptive). She's never actually killed anyone, after all.
tjgeezer (tjgeezer) says:
Personally, I think Carol's one of the two most consistently interesting characters in the strip. She doesn't seem bitchy to me, just not fully adapted to the group.
Josh Shepherd (bergerjacques) says:
Yes. Yes, you do suck. I've got to wait a whole week to find out if Carol gets by the lasers. And knowing you, that's at least two to three strips, you suspense sustaining fiend. ARGH!
Joe Chiappetta (joeychips) says:
I like the way you did the transparent glass in panel five.
Gonna be interesting to see how spry the old dean is. I can't wait to see what happens next.
I was a little leary of the appearence of twisted smiley, but I think you handled it well with being just a flash only our hero noticed. Nice bit of suspenseful foreshadowing to keep your reader hooked.
Finally, even though it was a small bit of characterization, I liked the small exchange in the last panel where Woodlouse comments on Carol's abilities and cockiness.
I forgot to draw Carol holding the Quantum Irregularity, which is KIND OF CRUCIAL TO THIS SEQUENCE. Geeeeeeeeez. (Smacks forehead repeatedly.)
I'm going to try and have it fixed...geez, I don't know. I probably won't have it ready until tuesday. We'll see. D'oh again.
Adam Prosser (prankster) says:
Thankew. And I can't say too much, but if you're concerned that I'm hitting the reset button in regards to Smiley just so I can milk him a little longer...don't worry. Let me put it this way, he's not going to be a major villain in this plot arc.
Oh, and a little question for "Greatsage", who posted a while back: you commented that the strip didn't have enough "TGTF"...might I ask what that is? Or do I want to know? Either way, clearly you need to tell me before I can put more in.
Unless it's Turnips Going To France. There'll be plenty of those.
I think what 'Greatsage' was meaning by TGTF was Transgendered Transformation. Mostly like what Cosmo & Woodlouse had happen to them when they went to spy on Cosmo's ex-girlfriend. Hope that explains your question.
Prankster, Goldie is right TG /TF is short hand for Transgendered /transformation, as in the comic where Woodlouse and Cosmo got turned into girls. I thought they made great girls and wouldn't have minded a lengthier (i.e. permanent) stay in that form, TF on it's own refers to any Transformation - e.g. boy to cat, girl to Naga or gerbil to aeroplane:) - basically anything that happens in El Goonish Shive or The Wotch.
Nah, I kid. That was more intended as another homage to zany 80s comedies than as an attempt to appeal to a certain internet...um...subculture, but hey, whatever floats your boat.
Stephen McMorland (greatsage) says:
Don't get me wrong - I am enjoying Freak U anyway. oh and judge not , lest ye be judged :)
Ben Slotnick (compl33tbull) says:
its kindergarten all over again
Adam Prosser (prankster) says:
Man, you went to a hardcore kindergarten.
Josh Shepherd (bergerjacques) says:
I love the "pew" onomatopoeias. I hope I spelled that right.
Adam Prosser (prankster) says:
Lasers should go "pew". That's just how the universe works.
Ben Slotnick (compl33tbull) says:
AAHHHHH BAD MEMORIES BAD MEMORIES!!!!!! AHHHH NOT ANNABELLE!!! SHE DID NOTHING!!! AAAAHHH
tjgeezer (tjgeezer) says:
Stephne McMorland - Thanks for the reminder of El Goonish Shive. One of my longtime favorites, and I haven't checked it out in altogether too long. Too distracted by other great strips, like Freak U.
Stephen McMorland (greatsage) says:
De nada tjgeezer, EGS is a lot of fun - there are many wonderful Web comics out there but Adam would get annoyed if I started talking about them as they tend to appeal to a "certain internet subculture" :) - oh by the way is that a deliberate misspell on my name? :)
Not satisfied with just ONE Cliffhanger at a time, huh.
Adam Prosser (prankster) says:
Coming up soon: THE ALL-CLIFFHANGER EPISODE.
The next strip--the next panel, in fact--looks wicked awesome right now. It might be a momentary reversion to my habit of putting up a half-coloured strip until tuesday, just to warn you, but it'll be totally worth it.
Adam Prosser (prankster) says:
Man, today's strip seems to be really popular! 1800 hits and counting! It's one of my best drawn strips, which must be a factor, but how do people know what the strip looks like before they click on it? Or am I just accruing a larger fanbase over the summer? Weird.
Josh Shepherd (bergerjacques) says:
You're right. That first panel rocked. Apparently, Mo used the smiley to interrupt the dean's computer screens, then went in for the he-man, robot wrecking rescue. Not bad. Not bad at all.
Adam Prosser (prankster) says:
Not exactly--don't forget the Smiley was popping up on the Omegans' computer as well. Mo wouldn't have touched that program after what happened last month. The Smiley is coming from somewhere else...
Stephen McMorland (greatsage) says:
Can you say recurring villain.... I knew you could :)
Ben Slotnick (compl33tbull) says:
wen im older, and if my ghostpuppet tatoo doesnt hurt to much, i would be honored to be able to get the smily as a tat
Stephen McMorland (greatsage) says:
And for those of us that have no idea what this Labour Day thing is - when is that in real terms? :)
