Aleas is Abúi's mother, a Wodeskovian faerie. For the past few years she has also been chieftain of her clan. Chieftains get elected by accclamation, for a limited period, and most clan members above middle age have held the chieftaincy for a while at least. The job is easy as long as you don't tell the other faeries what to do too much. (Actually, Aleas has considerable authority with the faeries in the clan, but that is because of who she is, not what she is.)

Aleas was a strict parent who regularly had to discipline Abúi and her friend Ottar for the mischief they got up to as kids. She gets along well with Ottar now that he's grown up, though, and has a lot more patience with the kids of the clan now that she's chieftain.
