It isn't always angst that possesses a girl to act the way she acts. Well, maybe a little bit of angst, a lot of clumsiness and a cleverly fitting name. I don’t think Hopeless is about a hopeless girl. It is about a girl drawn to hopelessness because her parents opted to name her so, perhaps not to give her hopelessness, but psychologically reverse its meaning. I don't think she has reached the potential to understand the meaning of her name and use it to her advantage. She certainly can hold her own, for which I give her credit. Moreover, she certainly can stand up for herself.
Then again, maybe I’m reading too deeply into a comic strip and that it indeed is about a girl who does not find hope in anything that crosses her path, and that the cloud over her head really is raining every single day.
Either way, Hopeless brightens my day, because there is a little bit of her in each of us.
