Friday - February 4, 2005:

On WNYc's Brian Lehrer Show this morning, a guest claimed that his company had developed a test to help employers determine the effectiveness of a potential employee. They were pushing to give kids access to the test in high school, a potentially huge money-maker since the company charges by the test-taker.

Personally, I find the notion of a standardized test trying to predict work habits in unique environments repulsive. Even Google's test, the Glat is designed merely as a feeder for their rigorous system of face-to-face interviews. Apparently, each employee goes through more than a dozen. In any case the Google test is no doubt much more interesting and challenging and to be fair it contains more than a couple of great questions.

It might be amusing to develop a test for potential web-cartoonists. Here I'll start:

1. Have you ever been convicted of a crime?

-Good. Some of the web's best cartoonists are convicted criminals. Seriously.

2. Are you familiar with the right click-copy and paste function of most web-browsers/art programs?

-Great. The internet can never have too many copy and paste comic strips.

3. Do you have trouble keeping schedules?

-Good. Schedules have no place in the web-comics world. You'll fit right in.

4. Have you ever seen comics in the newspaper?

-Excellent. With that kind of training, how can you fail to produce anything but the most cutting edge of comics and strips.

5. Are you comfortable with voting for your own strip on all the top lists for months on end in order to see your strip finally break into the top two hundred and fifty?

-Perfect. Are you sure you haven't done this before?

6. Have you been recently flamed or are you currently banned from more than two forums, discussion groups or public buildings?

-This one was sort of rhetorical. Stick around a while and you're sure to go through your share.

7. Are you comfortable with the idea that even if you do bust your ass and produce lots of great strips with beautiful art and stories on a timely basis, you still may not make a living at this?

-you're gonna fit right in.

Have I left anything out? Let's take a few questions from our audience.

(Sorry. I'm feeling a little punchy today. I love web-comics, honestly. Now bring on some of that cut and paste mediocrity.)

This was amusingly cynical, Bob.

That sort of conventional cynicism found all over the interweb. Liked the comic though.

I try to avoid sarcasm and cynicism when it comes to web-comics (had a bad day on the web though). There's plenty of room for the crap and the gold. Generally, I'd rather talk of the gold.

I'm actually very optimistic about comics and the web. A small few of them are very exciting. At the moment, I'm enjoying Platinum Grit. It looks like it's geared for small press print, but there's some nice placement in the flash files that create great panel transitions. I'm no Ausie so some of the dialogue has me puzzled but it's a fun romp so far.

The simple arrow-key interface may yet inspire me to dive back into the viewer I was working on a while back.
