Wednesday - February 9, 2005: Asylumantics is cute stuff. The format's a gag-a-day with just enough plot to keep things rolling. The art is crisp. A couple of the characters are beautifully rendered, I'm thinking here of Vlad and Gus. One character, Bread, is downright genuis. He seems to be a talking loaf of bread with a soft character to match that doughboy exterior (I'm also a fan of his superhero guise, Muffin Lad). Apparently, the Halloween cast are all residents of a lunatic asylum that has fallen on hard times, leaving the inmates running the asylum. it's a cute premise and its great to see halloween-style characters parading around the rest of the year. If it has a weakness, it's that cuteness factor. There's not enough edge to many of the story-lines to keep me checking back every day. Instead, there's too much good clean fun. Of course, That's not necessarily a bad thing. Also, the lettering is, at times, a little small. Asylumantics seems like a strip that could do well in newsprint if it could break through. Thanks for the submission and good luck. -Bob Stevenson
