August 29, 2008: Not drawings or comics but there's lots here that demand both. We spent the morning at the War Crimes Museum (French and US). I spent some time talking-dodging a guy with no arms and one leg selling postcards strapped in a box around his neck. He made me touch the stumps and his leg while we stood in the middle of a graveyard for captured American tanks and planes. Inside the museum, we were shocked by a deformed fetus preserved in a bottle, lots of brutal photographs, a French Guillotine, and less so by a room full of French and American propaganda.
Later, I dragged my wife, Stephanie, and our two friends to the Buddhist temple complex that was at the heart of protests against the US-backed Diem government. We snuck barefoot behind the big Buddha to see the shrine dedicated to the dozen plus monks who had killed themselves by self-immolation. Tough day
