September 8, 2008: This was fun. A huge chunk of the Smithsonian Comic Strip book is full of Popeye. When I read the thing as a kid, I remember being annoyed by all the emphasis on Popeye. Now, I get it.

I'm sure lots of people have seen lots of Sappo in Mr. Natura, but it was news to me. I think Crumb owes quite a bit to Segar.
