I'm still happy with the way all the illustrations came out in this one. The first one is especially good. If I remember correctly, the background code is just text from the story printed in a font that makes it all screwy.

In the second illustration, the life line on Dave's palm is broken to represent the time he was dead. There it is, the most obscure joke in Narbonic. Thank you. Also, can I just point out that hands are super hard to draw?

Speaking of that illustration, the line used as the caption suggests something about Dave that wouldn't be revealed for another couple of years. I had not told Jeffrey about this plot twist. Jeffrey just really knew the characters. This is the kind of kismet that led us to collaborate on Skin Horse down the road. That, and I put Artie in little goggles, and Jeff is an absolute sucker for animals in little goggles.

The alt-tag dedication for this installment is "to Andrew, for all the help with the inking." He inked the whole apparatus around Artie in the third illustration. Thank you again, Andrew!

So It Begins (soitbegins) says: Heh.
Leon Arnott (l) says: "Life line... broken"? ...Good grief! Get this lady to a sanitarium!

I personally think it's a bit unfortunate that the waning star of The Matrix has poisoned the reception of this particular chapter, insofar as it is impossible not to think of it as you behold that familiar curtain of green symbols. If this was produced a mere five years prior or hence, I suspect that the familiar, perennially fashionable Tron Lines would be used to portray this virtual environment.
Ed Gedeon (eddurd) says:

(TUNE: "Only Wanna Be With You", Hootie & The Blowfish)

Getting kinda crazy
With a rogue A.I.,
My brain gets hazy when he plays Brahms's "Lullaby",
Wish I could dismantle this!
Then, with some surprise,
That Dave could handle this with ease I realize!
Man, that music's like a drug ...
I really wanna pull the plug!

Shaenon Garrity (shaenongarrity) says:

Leon: The upcoming remake is likely to dampen nostalgia for all things "Tron."
Jeffrey Channing Wells (channing) says: Critter-Space is perhaps my favorite single concept from this Very Long Fan-Fic.  I love the idea of a trackball-style input one can manipulate from within, and of course, as mentioned, it gave me an excuse to put a cute little critter in goggles, which is pretty much fictional perfection right there.
Valerie Kaplan (shinyhappygoth) says: Ohhhh, yeah.  That definitely is Farrago inking.  He's quite distinctive.
