Michael Brewer (wusemajor) says: And now I find myself wishing that the Werewolf Virus worked on the dogs so I could actually judge that last statement properly.
Alix Tierney (almaseti) says: I love wolf!Tip and his adorable little glasses. Sparkle and Sweetheart are awesome. Also, I just noticed how you're drawing Sparkle's eyes with more of a lash than Sweetheart's. Nice touch.
Dave Van Domelen (dvandom) says: And Tip got on board too, chickawocka....
Four Deer (fourdeerinmyyard) says: Nobody appreciates unsexy authoritarians.  Inexplicable.
Drew (pseudowolf) says:

So.....did he or didn't he?

Should the pack be expecting litters of little Wolf!Tip/Husky puppies in the future? (Tuppies? Pips?)
Rob (rrreed) says: Buddy will obviously need to have explained to him how this was all his idea…
James Kehl (shykta) says:

@Drew: I think it would depend on whether the good Captain fiddled their mating behaviour or not. I mean, the bitches didn't look in heat - at least *before* the Tipwolf showed up...

I doubt he used protection, though (it's awkward enough when you have opposable thumbs...)

[ Now here's a question for the Mad Biologists: could civilization have developed without humans first losing their visible fertility indicators? ]

So It Begins (soitbegins) says: Got on board how?
Richard Wendling (misterflames) says:

Humans had to go a different path, since our offspring are pretty much helpless out of the box and need several years of work.  So our 'visible fertility indicators' changed into the present female form.  Human females and their secondary sexual characteristics are there to keep the trap baited, after all, since it encourages the male to hang around and help support the offspring.

This does not encourage monogamy exclusively, it just keeps someone around to share the labors.  I don't know if they've proven it yet, but it does lend itself to interesting lines of thinking for us plains apes.

Ed Gedeon (eddurd) says:

(TUNE: "It's A Long Way To Tipperary", by Jack Judge)

It's not easy to be unsexy
And the head of this clan ...
It's not easy to be unsexy,
And au-thor-i-tar-i-an!
Buddy, though slightly nutty,
Has good looks and youth!
It's a hard, hard life to be unsexy;
That's the plain ugly truth!

Andrew Kunz (miyaa) says: I'm disappointed, Ed. Using my alma mater's fighting song (the fight song used the same tune) as a filk. Plus, you didn't exploit the use of Tip in "Tipperary!" (And it had a second verse.)
K C (spotweld) says: There's an Al Gore joke to be madde somewhere here..  but's Monday morning and I'm just not up for it. Assume semi-snarky witty-ness **here**
Vlad Taltos (flyingfish) says: @KC: Also possibly an Obama one.
Camille Dumas (camidumas) says: I always found Al Gore sexy.  Even before the beard.
Maricruz Villalobos-Zamora (maki_p) says: Does the joke include Clinton 1? (I don't think he's sexy, but that's why he won right?)
Drew (pseudowolf) says: I think Clinton won his first term more because he seemed younger and more dynamic than Bush (the "elder Bush") and because Perot split the conservative vote. At least that's how it looked to me.
Ed Gedeon (eddurd) says: @Andrew:  You're right, I should have worked a pun about "Tip" in there somehow.  Give me a break, most of these are written immediately after I get out of bed, without benefit of coffee.
Shaenon Garrity (shaenongarrity) says:

I'm not a big fan of the "women's sex drives evolved to trick men into sticking around to change diapers" theory. I mean, it's a cute just-so story, but there's not a lot of evidence for it. There are plenty of other species that form strong pair bonds to care for offspring, but the females aren't horny all the time. Like, as has been pointed out above, wolves and dogs.
Richard Wendling (misterflames) says:

True, true, but it does pose other questions, too.  The dogs here seem much more human in their actions, honestly, but that's possibly because of both upbringing and being chimeras.  At this point, it's really all just conjecture, until we actually contact another sapient species, or grow our own from the locals.

And while wolves and swans form strong pair-bonds, do other great apes?  Our nearest relatives, chimpanzees, are rather vicious little critters.  I'm sure your thoughts on the matter would be quite interesting, and I would welcome some thoughtful debate.  I'll admit to not knowing, but humans do not necessarily pair-bond.  Intelligence may just make us more complicated.

Fandarel (fandarel) says: Ed, that just makes them MORE impressive.
Four Deer (fourdeerinmyyard) says:

Ed:  You get creative WITHOUT BENEFIT OF COFFEE?  Are you MAD?
***
Nobody in Particular:  If this site turns into another political screechfest like certain strips at Gocomics, I shall slit my wrists.  I’m just sayin’.
***
There is this to consider:  The nuclear family is a new thing.  The family, which was mom-plus-kids, even if short an adult male, would not have been on its own, but would have been surrounded and supported by the rest of the troop/tribe.  Once weaned, the kids would be looked after by all their elders, more or less.  I confess I haven’t read the latest research.  Somebody cite me something.

Michael Brewer (wusemajor) says: heheheheheheheheh.
Drew (pseudowolf) says: HAHAHA! Oh man! It's been a while since a strip has made me *literally* laugh out loud. Long, loud laughter, too. Glad I didn't read this at work, but I have a suspicion I'll be flashing back on it in my mind all day and laughing randomly. I hope they won't think I've finally snapped. :)
Rockphed (rockphed) says: I think I might need some brain bleach now.  I'm not sure though because I am trying not to think about it.
Rob (rrreed) says: Yes, Tip's a stud, Muffin.

What?
Daniel Ross (nentuaby) says:

LOL. Okay, I wasn't expecting that. More power to ya, Muffin. :-D

Dave Van Domelen (dvandom) says: Bishy dog.
Mark Cantrell (kita) says:

A... gay/bi dog?

*bzzzt*  ERROR IN IO STREAM BRAIN.SYS ABORT RETRY FAIL?_

So It Begins (soitbegins) says: Heh heh.
Mel Van Weelden (kessalia) says: I've had gay cats, why not?
Kenneth Reeves (tetramorpheus) says: Ouch. Hard luck for Muffin... given that homosexual behaviours are (apparently) most prevalent in primates and birds, finding a canid of a similar persuation might be rough. Doggie-style jokes aside.
Ed Gedeon (eddurd) says:

(TUNE: "Walk On By", written by Bacharach & David, sung by Dionne Warwick)

If you feel your heartbeat start to skip,
Well dude, get a grip!  Here's a quick tip:
He's not bi!
He's not bi ... not into men!
So even if you think he's bishonen,
I say he's not gay, he likes ladies!
He won't date a guy!
He's not bi!  ( ho ... yay )
He's not bi!  ( no ... way )

Andrew Kunz (miyaa) says:

I don't know about gay cats or dogs. I've had dogs who were into cats, to the point of trying to mount a cat. If you could imagine a toy poodle trying to mountain a tabby, then you'd know how twisted my aunt's dog was. That dog needs professional help.

Nicky . (nicky_diva) says: So I got in touch with the Fairbanks Public Library about the sled dog shirt someone posted a couple of pages back.  They write,  "They come in assorted colors and sizes but are rather picked over presently.  There are some purple and grey adult XXL shirts, green and grey XL, and grey S."  I've also asked them about reprinting.  If anyone's interested, I'll put together an order (with some added for shipping, once I find out what that is).  Pls email me BEFORE AUGUST 15:  bladelily, at symbol, gmail dot com.
Jon Stout (brasswatchman) says: Okay, now I'm *really* getting an Artie vibe from Muffin...
Adam Underfoot (unnatural20) says: Yeah, I've ecountered homosexual dogs and cats, but only males. Though I've heard tales, at least, of lesbian dogs.
Joyce Melton (halfelven) says: I've known a fair number of female dogs who exhibited lesbian behavior, trying to mount other females. A few of those would try to mount anything, one, even a rifle. :)
Rob (rrreed) says: Everyone might want to check out "Paradigm Shift" today, BTW.
Andrew Kunz (miyaa) says:

Rob: *snirk*

I wonder, if dogs could talk, would they be saying similar things like what Sparkle said at the Westminster Dog Competition? (Oh, the preening.)

Corgi (corgi) says: A lot of that mounting stuff isn't gayness, it's dominance behaviour.  Without those handy vocal cords tuned correctly for human speech, it's a little difficult to tell the difference sometimes.
Kenneth Reeves (tetramorpheus) says: And here I thought Sparkle's first responce would be to challenge the whole "My pack" comment on Sweetheart's part.
So It Begins (soitbegins) says: Sigh....
Ed Gedeon (eddurd) says:

Just saw the "Paradigm Shift" cartoon ... I love it, but now I've gotta write three filks today.

(TUNE: "The Leader Of The Pack", The Shangri-Las)
(appropriate, no?)

Tip, you were not a part of this bunch ...
By now, you should be somebody's lunch!
  (His superpower's working, I've got a hunch)
But now you're quadrupedal, first time,
You come in and you meddle with mine!
You jump right in and you're alpha of the pack!

Eric Burns (ericburns) says:

Sparkle doesn't need to refute Sweetheart's 'my pack' comment. She's not insecure about her dominance. That's what ultimately makes her dominant. She just knows in her canine heart that if anyone but anyone challenges her she'll be making them whimper and pee within five minutes.

Sweetheart, on the other hand, has insecurity issues -- she wants and needs to be dominant (she promised the Captain) but she lacks that core certainty and confidence that makes it a fait accompli.

Remember -- Sparkle's jealousy of Sweetheart was entirely personal. The Captain liked Sweetheart more.  Now Sweetheart has humans who care about her (sure, they're just humans, but still). Sweetheart's jealousy was social -- Sparkle ran with the popular dogs. Sparkle won the dominance fight. Sparkle stole Sweetheart's himbo. Sparkle simply was dominant.

Put this another way: Sweetheart had a major complex over Tip being made field commander for this mission. Sparkle, on the other hand, voluntarily gave Buddy the Alpha position because she recognized dogs liked him more. Now she can preserve Buddy's status and (generally) give orders and know they're being followed while everyone is happy with their leader.

That's the difference between craving dominance and being dominant.

Four Deer (fourdeerinmyyard) says: Eric, you said that so much better than I was about to!
Joyce Melton (halfelven) says:

I get it, Sparkle is a Capricorn, Buddy is a Gemini with Aries or Leo rising and Sweetheart is probably a Sagittarius with an opposed or quartered Jupiter.

Tip is a Scorpio, or an Aquarius with Scorpio rising (always risque). Mercury in Aries, Venus in a water sign, Jupiter trine with the sun.

Unity, of course, is a Taurus with Saturn in a fire sign.

I'm making this all up. :)

Drew (pseudowolf) says:

I would've figured Tip to be an Ares in the house of Venus. We know he's *definitely* no Virgo.

(There are no spelling errors in this post)

Jon McCormick (youko) says:

Came here after seeing the crossover on Paradigm Shift and I'm glad I did. Definitely gonna keep watching this comic. ^_^

It's pretty funny seeing howTip affects the pack members and Sweetheart. =)
Shaenon Garrity (shaenongarrity) says:

Sweetheart doesn't feel the need to be dominant so much as the need to be responsible. Poor Sweetheart.

So far, Nick is the only character who's been given a birthdate (it's in his LJ profile). Going from her full name, Sweetheart was probably born in February. I've never been big on astrology, possibly because both my Western and Chinese signs are incredibly boring. (Andrew's a dragon. He thinks he's so great.)
Paul Gadzikowski (pgadzikowski) says: I'm a pig, Chinese. We make the best friends. I'm just saying.
Jeffrey Channing Wells (channing) says:

Yeah, well, at least your Zodiac sign is alive.  My celestial totem is a frikkin' hunk of chattel.  How am I supposed to associate with that?

Chinese-wise speaking, I'm a Tiger, which is so utterly wrong as to immediately dispel any lingering notions I might have had about the overall correctness of that system.

Drew (pseudowolf) says: Yep. Not even Sparkle can resist Tip's powers.
Corgi (corgi) says:

Wait, what - Libra??

I am perpetually annoyed that my Chinese sign is NOT the Dog.  Get this - the most feline person I know is a Dog... and I'm a Tiger. :headdesk:  It's just not right.

So It Begins (soitbegins) says: eeEp!
Ed Gedeon (eddurd) says:

(TUNE: "California Dreamin'", The Mamas and The Papas)

Tip is now a wolf
That all the girls adore!
"Not for me," says Sweetheart,
"A colleague, nothing more!"
Sparkle says, "It's fine, then,
If I try to score ..."
Tip and Sparkle shipping!
It's Ru-ule Thirty-Four!

Andrew Kunz (miyaa) says:

I'm an Aquarius and a Rabbit. Which probably means there's a hot cross bunnies joke in there someplace. Although if Wikipedia is right, the start of the Chinese New Year can mean splitting hares. Hah...

Now, if we can get Eric to translate Zodiac signs (or Sparkle) into In Nomine angelic/demonic classification, we'd really accomplish something.

Robin (fiddlerbird555) says: I've heard of Rule 6, but what's rule 34?
Kathy Moon (flipkat) says: "I will not turn into a snake. It never helps".
Drew (pseudowolf) says:

I've heard of Rule 6, but what's rule 34?

"If it exists, there is porn of it. NO EXCEPTIONS."

Mel Van Weelden (kessalia) says: Considering their history with Buddy, would it have mattered to Sparkle if Sweetheart DID care?  Maybe she was just asking to rub it in more.  *L*
John Lussmyer (bigcat) says: Looks like so many people are checking for Skin Horse porn on Rule34 that they've crashed the site...
David Toboz (professor_zobot) says:

Yes. Yes, let's all forget about the fact that this werewolf in particular happens to be of the variety that's gradually going to lose it's mind and become a feral killing machine. Let's all let our guards down because he happens to be CUTE. Oi... people can be kinda silly about stuff like that.

That being said, I can't imagine Buddy's going to be very happy when he finds out that Tip's recruited all of the women (and a percentage of the men) into going along with a plan he himself was strongly against. Especially if Buddy's stupid enough to really believe himself to be the Alpha around here.

Megan Brunner (avid) says: Wait.  I thought Sparkle and Buddy were mates, and wolves mate for life.  How can Sparkle make a move on Tip if she's with Buddy?  Did the Captain screw that instinct up when he made the pack intelligent?   Or am I just wrong about Sparkle and Buddy's couple status?
Dirk Tiede (dirktiede) says: More human in them than they'd like to admit, I suspect.
Jeffrey Channing Wells (channing) says:

Instincts are not stone-chiseled tracks down which organisms must roll, and any individual of any species may choose to "buck the system", so to speak, and go his or her own way.

That having been said, Buddy and Sparkle are dogs.  Different beast altogether.

Rob (rrreed) says: And Sweetheart thought that this mission couldn't get aaaaaaaany worse as far as she was concerned. Are we about to see a rampage?
Cara d(^o^)b (carakaze) says: @Megan: Sparkle doesn't seem to *like* Buddy all that much... :-\  Maybe he's just useful as alpha?
Jeff Ehlers (jaimehlers) says: You know, it's occurred to me that they may not have had a case like this before, especially with a human.  Maybe giving Tip the vaccine gave him an immunity to the side-effects of the werewolf curse while still leaving the main one active.
Michael Brewer (wusemajor) says: I'm honestly curious as to whether Tip will be able to win a dominance challenge with Buddy.
Four Deer (fourdeerinmyyard) says: Um, Shaenon & Jeff?  On the Uclick/Gocomics site, the figure on the left in panel 1 is very obviously Wolf-Tip (glasses; wolfish face), which of course leaves the remark in panel 3 making no sense.  Can you fix it before anyone else notices?
Corgi (corgi) says:

Four Deer, if you hadn't said anything over there, maybe they WOULDN'T have noticed. *grin*

Andrew Kunz (miyaa) says:

Sweetheart is only upset that she hasn't banged Tip yet.

Mind you, we don't know yet if Tip actually has scored through the five hole, if you know what I mean.

Andy Wetmore (efogoto) says: Nice. A puck joke. A pun form of innuendo. If you know what I mean.
Fandarel (fandarel) says:

I don't think I get the joke.

I don't think I want to.

So It Begins (soitbegins) says: Me neither.
Richard Wendling (misterflames) says: I didn't, but I couldn't resist, and now I do.  Trust me, it's not as bad as it could have been.
Ed Gedeon (eddurd) says:

(TUNE: "Go The Distance" from Disney's "Hercules", Alan Menken & David Zippel)

Tip is now canine;
Sparkle thinks he's fine,
So they go out walking in the northern woods ...
Her opinion swayed
As his point is made,
And Tip shows her how he'll be delivering the goods!

He will win today!  Scoring through the five hole!
On a power play!  Stick-work is sublime!
And the crowd, it roars
As he shoots, he scores!
And then Sparkle asks him "Can we go to overtime?"

Jeffrey Channing Wells (channing) says: Oh, deary me, this is what happens when you have two versions of the art.  Bah.  Thanks for noticing.
Tiff Hudson (tiff_hudson) says: Captain Bram stored the serum in a giant Ink Bottle? :-)
Andrew Kunz (miyaa) says: Just be glad I didn't use a curling reference. Because it's the only time women could see guys actually using a broom, with vigor even.
Name Saulis (namesaulis) says: I really like the first panel, with the dogs standing around looking at each other, visibly thinking, "How did we set this thing up without hands? Did you do it? I don't understand how we even got this far."
Four Deer (fourdeerinmyyard) says: Corgi (corgi) says:  Four Deer, if you hadn't said anything over there, maybe they WOULDN'T have noticed. *grin*

Usually I read Skin Horse here first, because the pictures are bigger and the comments are better, but I keep Skin Horse on my Gocomics subscription queue in order to add to its number of subscribers.  Last night / this morning I was in the neighborhood there so I just said what the heck and dropped in.  I indeed wrote a comment mentioning the error.  Then I ambled over here to see if anyone else was awake, and noticed the different art in panel 1.  Upon realizing that the one at Gocomics was just a posting error and that there was new improved art available, I decided the most useful thing I could do was erase my comment at Gocomics and come back here and noodge Shaenon.  Maybe five minutes at most passed between my posting and unposting that comment.  You must have read it during those five minutes.  I erased it as quickly as possible.  You will observe that the first comment now there was posted at about 2:00 a.m., Central time--and the commenter noticed the discrepancy.  If my admittedly fuzzy memory is correct, that's about 90 minutes after I unposted my comment.  So I did NOT direct anyone's attention to it.  If you recall having read my comment at Gocomics at a time closer to 2:00 a.m., then my memory is at fault and I stand corrected.  But to the best of my awareness it was more like 12:30 CDT.
Adam Underfoot (unnatural20) says: Uh. Four Deer, your comment is still here. Your comment, here on WCN? That's what Corgi was talking about, mm?
Adam Underfoot (unnatural20) says: Oh, Buddy. You give us guys a bad name. Unfortunately it's also usually a justified name.
Four Deer (fourdeerinmyyard) says:

Corgi (corgi) says:  Four Deer, if you hadn't said anything OVER THERE....

(my emphasis)

Look, I don't want to keep on about this; I was distressed that anyone (particularly S. & J.) might think I was trying to create a problem for this strip, which I dearly love, that's all.

Ed Gedeon (eddurd) says:

(TUNE: "Lovely Rita", The Beatles)

Stupid Buddy, cruddy stud!
Why are you so annoying?
Like a young pup, you won't shut up your mouth!

You imply your life is bettered
When it's you who gets unfettered;
Hitting on me now before your alpha gets back!
I'm alone, but still you find me!
Talk a bit, and you remind me
Why I didn't miss you after leaving the pack!

Stupid Buddy, cruddy stud!
Putting yourself in peril!
Eunuch you'll be if Unity hears you!

So It Begins (soitbegins) says: Sigh...
Joyce Melton (halfelven) says:

Dogs and wolves are different on this. Wolves mate for "life" rather like humans. (Yeah, I know.) With wolves, alphas come in mated pairs, one of each sex. Dog packs are likely to be nonce affairs and the alpha can be either sex, though since males are slightly bigger, they tend to be dominant. In a household, the humans are usually the alphas.

The whole situation of the pack of mutant dogs has got to be unstable. Wolves would pair up and split off to form new packs. Subdominant dogs would, like Sweetheart, look for another pack. The talking dogs are acting more like humans in this, actually.

And maybe that makes sense. Where did the good doctor get the genes for making talking dogs? From humans. So some human behaviors undoubetly came along. Logically, these are going to be some severely neurotic "people" until they have time, generations, to work out a culture that fits their psychology.

I think Jeff and Shaenon are doing really well on the neurotic part. :)

Terry Volkirch (terry) says:

So how can Tip handle being a wolf? I'd think he'd freak out not being able to wear his lovely, feminine outfits.

By the way, I'm a double Gemini Tiger. Can anyone tell me what that's supposed to mean? No, really. What does it mean?

Shaenon Garrity (shaenongarrity) says:

By the way, I'm a double Gemini Tiger.

That sounds like a make of Japanese motorcycle.

Tip is a Virgo, believe it or not. Close to the cusp.
Jeffrey Channing Wells (channing) says: Four Deer, Corgi:  Nah, it's all good.  No worries!  Four Deer, thanks for the catch.  :)
Robin Sandlin (desdinovab) says: @terry: Tip will be fine for a little while. Look at that lovely fur coat, and cruelty free as well!
Andrew Kunz (miyaa) says: "A bold and unfettered people" ? Someone been reading a little too much Animal Farm.
Eric Burns (ericburns) says:

Besides, never underestimate the healing power of a really cute hairbow or kerchief.

Tip will be fine.

Four Deer (fourdeerinmyyard) says: Thanks, Jeff.
Terry Volkirch (terry) says:

Tip is a Virgo, believe it or not. Close to the cusp.

Close to which cusp? Leo or Libra? I'll guess Libra.

Stephen Granade (sgranade) says: These days he's closer to Leo.
Cara d(^o^)b (carakaze) says: @Joyce Melton: Are you sure the DNA is from humans?  What if it's from superintelligent gerbils instead? XD  There must be a few loose packs *somewhere*...
