Nick is, in the strictest sense, a superhuman. However, on Atlas, you have to be a superman, just to stay alive. Super-strength and extraordinary durability are survival traits when you live under 6 times the gravity of Earth.

Nick, like all Atlasians, is descended from the branch of superhumans gifted with extra-normal strength and toughness. From the borderline super-strongman, to the Apex-class, all of them were transplanted to Atlas on that fateful day in 2119.

Nick's family are ranchers, raising bovs for food and skins. The bov is native to Atlas and is something like a cross between a cow and an ankylosaur. Nick is studying for a degree in gravity engineering, a branch of paragravity technology. He is a gifted innovator and inventor. He has developed a paragrav "shotgun", for repelling screechers. The recoilless PSG can be used by even the smallest person. He designed and built the first "flypod", a device which alters the paragravity fields of a standard atmosfield belt, allowing a person to fly. This has tremendous significance on Atlas, where the ability to fly carries so much social significance. Nick and his family come from the "grounder" class on Atlas, people who cannot fly, but are strong and tough enough to survive on the surface.
