Ulysses Fox is a hunter. From a world of hunters. On Wilder, you learn to hunt just after learning to walk and just before potty training. Gotta have priorities.

The planet Wilder is slightly cooler, on average, than the Earth in human times and has a somewhat longer year. It's orbit is nearly circular and its axial tilt is only 6 degrees, giving it milder seasonal changes than Earth.

A world of contrasts, is Wilder. There are more ferocious beasts (some of them human) per square mile than any known planet. There is no agriculture, apart from cultivation of the local crops needed to produce phenomenal ales and beers, and what passes for government on Wilder is considered inadequate even to run a kindergarten class, with no students. On the other hand, Wilder has a first rate education system, based on a series of apprenticeships. There is a nearly 100% literacy rate and the level of technology is surprisingly sophisticated.

All manufacturing on Wilder is done underground, in mountain factory tunnels. A good portion of it is accomplished by means of microscopic (not quite nano-scale) machines. Wilder's mountains are rich in many useful metals, and provide the source for the planet's two major technology exports.

Fox's family is involved in one of those, the construction of starships and space fighters. The other major export is the recent introduction of space-energy extraction technology, a technique for converting the energy of the vacuum into useful power.
