After working on that drawing by John Byrne, I got the bug to do something similar. So, I looked around for classic comic covers to "reimagine". This is my first go at it. It's been a long time since I worked on this scale, I usually work on 9 X 12 or 11 X 14, these days. This is done on 11X 17 bristol board, just like a real comic cover. I'm planning to do a few of these, for fun and possibly for sale. I wish my lettering was up to it, I'd letter the covers, like the originals.

For anyone who's read the book, this guy will be at least somewhat familiar. Doctor Impossible is the villain in Austin Grossman's "Soon I Will Be Invincible", a sympathetic villain,  who created his own nemesis, rather than the other way around. I borrowed a bit from Bryan Hitch's interpretation of the character, but I wanted to make sure to get the power staff in the scene.

You know, I think this is the first time I've ever worked up a design that included fins on the gloves. Not a style element I'd normally include in a modern age character, but that's how he's described in the book.

I highly recommend the book. It's very faithful to the super-hero genre, while managing a bit of deconstruction along the way. The insights into certain character types and the characters themselves make it more than just an adventure story, but there's plenty of comic-style action and intrigue, too.

And here is the same image, without the lettering

I tried to stick with Jack's original layout, as much as I could, but made a few changes, like having Cyclops working his visor, and actually drawing in the visor. I thought Hank swinging from the crane hook worked better in the context of the story. That T-bar Jack draw looks like a Danger Room swing, to me.

It was fun to draw Snow----I mean Iceman like this. I don't think I ever drew him in his earliest form.

My layout, not being for an actual cover, uses more of the page space than a real comic cover would.

I should mention that I have the greatest respect for Jack Kirby and the other artists who's work I'll be playing around with until this particular obsession burns itself out.
