Nick says: I think this one turned out alright. How about you?
Prompted by Iron Man 2, I've been going back through some of my old superhero comics. I re-read The Ultimates (Marvel's Ultimate universe take on The Avengers, and the reason Samuel L. Jackson was cast as Nick Fury in the current batch of Marvel movies). It was alright -- a perfectly fine superhero comic. Then I picked up some Green Lantern (the newer Geoff Johns stuff, starting with the redemption of Hal Jordan), and boy am I loving it (again). I mean, it's not good, in the way that The Killing Joke is good, or Maus, or Watchmen. It's actually pretty silly, really. But so much fun!
So here's my homework for you all. Go back to a superhero you liked when you were a kid. Borrow a graphic novel from the library. Forget everything you now know about good plotting and quality writing and all that stuff, and see if you can't just read the book with the uncritical eye of a seven year old. Maybe you won't have as much fun as I'm having. But maybe you will. And if you do, I'd love to hear about it!
