Oh How Sourly Brief

One of the weirdest experiences I've ever had was someone asking me to be best friends with them. Unsure what to say, I just kind of shrugged and muttered "Sure." Luckily, we clicked great and did become best friends.

Then one day in Winter, it was suddenly over. Just like that. No explanation. There was no fight (never even had a disagreement) and there was nothing to even act as a prelude to what was to come. It just sort of... ended.

I find out later that the person was notorious for becoming instant best friends with people for long periods of time and then suddenly breaking off with the other. Nobody knows why.

This puzzled me. I tried to take it as a compliment that someone would at least pick me to be their temporary best friend, but it kept bubbling up as an insult. Am I boring? Did I change? Did I do something wrong? What's my defect? What happened?

Sometimes I think that was the person's goal-- to create these unsettling questions in a person to shake them loose and leave them battered and insecure.

That's mighty clever, actually.
