The sheep are the Benflower family's way of making a living, and so Kefke takes his work seriously. It's very lonely taking the sheep out to graze and through the wilderness to different markets and trading posts, but if he doesn't do it, who will?

He can be stoic and serious to a fault, but playing the harmonica or being with Sunny or Cierro always loosens him up, even if for a little while.
