Will Petrey ||

I first began drawing cartoon characters back in 1970 when I drew a picture of Walt Disney’s Jiminy Cricket in a bowling alley childcare center. Encourage by these early tentative steps, I went on to further develop my drawing talents during high school. I opted for vocational training in commercial art my last two years of high school. This is where I became the student of small press legend Jim Pack (of Comet Tales and Comicist fame). Jim Pack was the first person to introduce me, to the joys of creating my own comics. My first published comic work was a four page science fiction story entitled The Peace Maker, appearing in the first issue of Jim Pack’s Comet Tales”.

    I received a scholarship from the Columbus College of Art and Design, from which I received a bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Retail advertising in May 1987. During my college years, I collaborated with Pete Longmeier on our first creator/owned project entitled, Blip and the C.C.A.D.S. for Amazing Comics in 1987. This was also the first time I met Mike Carroll, who was working on his very first issue of RoboStick at the time. Shortly after Mike and I joined forces to produce RoboStick the series. Will, also collaborated with Mike to produced Elastic kid around the same time. Shortly thereafter, I went on to get several professional inking jobs for various independent comic book companies. Around 1993, I again teamed up with a friend named Robert Whitaker to produce a creator/owned project called Dragon Tales for Cat’s Paw Comics. After the completion of our Dragon Tales project I decided to retire from pro comics, so that I could concentrate on his professional Graphics Arts career, wife and children. Today I’m now an advertising manager for an auto parts wholesaler in Charlotte North Carolina. Living and loving life with comics on the side, what more could I ask for? Hope you enjoy your visit at School House Comics.
